Gas Vouchers

One of the goals of the Columbia Basin Cancer Foundation is to make it easier for cancer patients to get to treatment. Many of the Cancer Patients in Grant and Adams Counties must travel outside of the two counties to get treatment.    Some have to travel as far as Spokane, Seattle, and Kennewick.

Free Bus for Cancer Patients

Some cancer patients must commute to Wenatchee Valley Medical Center for radiation therapy 5 days a week for an average of 6 consecutive weeks. The Columbia Basin Cancer Foundation sponsors a bus through the Grant County Transit Authority that takes patients from the Moses Lake Clinic to the Wenatchee Valley Medical Center.  The bus runs 5 days a week and is free to cancer patients.  This bus supplies patients not only with transportation, but also with a support network, that starts with John, the caring and compassionate driver.   The Foundation also supplies quilts and pillows, that are made by our volunteers, to these patients.

Special Dietary and Health Needs

There are many side effects that come as a result of cancer treatments.  Some of these can effect your ablitity or desire to get the nutrition needed to stay healthy.  Side effects such as loss of appetite (anorexia), sore mouth or throat, dry mouth, dental and gum problems, changes in taste or smell, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, and fatigue can all lead cancer patients to not get the nutritution that they need.   Some cancer patients have to eat/drink nutritutional supplements in order to get the proper nutrition.  The Columbia Basin Cancer Foundation strives to help patients and caregivers with this added expense by assisting financially on a case by case basis.  We also have reading material on proper nutrition during treatment available in our office.  Also check out the following articles:

The Columbia Basin Cancer Foundation also hosts a support group that meets once a month in Moses Lake.  The support group is open to caregivers, patients, and survivors of all cancers types.  It meets on the third Monday of every month in the Moses Lake Senior Center at 5:30 PM.  The support group coordinators are Paul and Nancy Boehm.
